A brief history of Jaguar Cars

Sir William Lyons (4 September 1901 – 8 February 1985) co-founded Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922 with William Walmsley. The company would be renamed Jaguar Cars Ltd, after the Second World War.

The Swallow Sidecar Company manufactured stylish sidecars at their Blackpool (England) manufacturing facility. By 1927, increasing numbers of low cost coach-built cars were being manufactured, notably the Austin Seven Swallow.

Following several moves to larger premises in Blackpool, in 1928 Lyons moved the company to Coventry (England). In 1931, they began selling their SS1 model car. In 1933 the company name was changed to SS Cars Ltd.

The first "Jaguar" model was offered in 1935. William Lyons changed the company name to Jaguar Cars Limited after World War II. The second name change was made to avoid the unfortunate connotations with the Nazi SS “Schutzstaffel”.
